Save Energy This Summer While Saving Your Wallet

Who doesn’t love running their air conditioning all day long during the summers in Orlando. What we don’t love about our Orlando heating and cooling system is paying a high utility bill. If you’ve been looking for a way to save energy and money at the same time, here are some ideas on how to make that happen:

  • Line the attic with insulation. Hot air can escape from the attic into your home, making it harder to keep cool. Add a few inches of insulation to combat infiltrating air.
  • Seal air ducts and leaks. If there are leaks in the ductwork, cool air will escape and not reach the living spaces. Sealing leaks will keep the AC efficient.
  • Change out light bulbs. Replace incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs). CFLs generate less heat, which translates into energy savings.
  • Use heat-generating appliances sparingly. Bake food, run the dishwasher and dry clothes when it is cooler outside. The decreased daytime energy usage will save from straining your AC.
  • Shun the sun. Solar heat steals any energy savings you may have accumulated. Awnings, curtains, shades and shutters effectively block the sun to keep heat out of your home.
  • Embrace the night. Take advantage of cooler nighttime air and open the windows. Turn on a fan to draw in the cooler air as well. Close the windows in the morning to trap the cool air.
  • Turn on the fan. Whether you use a box fan, ceiling fan or desktop fan, it will cool the air a few degrees.
  • Turn up the thermostat. Set the thermostat at 78 degrees when you’re home. If you plan on being away from home for a while, turn the thermostat up to 82 degrees.
  • Use a programmable thermostat. You can enter various settings on a programmable thermostat so that the AC runs at a certain temperature at certain times of the day.
