5 Ways You Can Save on Heating Bills This Winter

If you’re dreading the annual heating bills that come with cooler winter weather, there are several things that you can do to try and combat this issue. With the right tactics, you can keep your home warm without increasing your energy bills significantly. Try these tips for a comfortable yet affordable winter season this year.

1. Schedule Furnace Maintenance

Your heater is more efficient when it’s well maintained. You should schedule a furnace tune-up once a year. The best time for this is in early autumn before you turn on your heating system for the first time. However, if you haven’t seen a furnace technician in the last year, you should book your maintenance visit as soon as possible.

During a tune-up, your system is thoroughly cleaned which helps it run more efficiently. Your technician will also clean out your drain line, tighten electrical connections, and adjust critical components. In addition to lowering your heating bill, this will also help prevent repair needs and increase the life of your system.

2. Adjust Your Programmable Thermostat

A programmable thermostat is a powerful tool for trimming your utility bills. In the winter, you should set the temperature back to keep the house cooler. This is especially true during periods when you’re out of the house or asleep. You can compensate for cooler temperatures at night with flannel sheets, extra blankets, and warmer pajamas. Aim to maintain set temperatures for at least eight hours at a time. This is the most efficient way for your furnace to operate.

3. Keep the Air Filter Clean

Check your air filter once a month. If you can see a visible buildup of dust and dirt, change the filter immediately. Swap your air filter for a new one at least once every three months. When the filter is clean, it takes less energy for the furnace to pull air through. A dirty filter results in higher energy bills.

4. Seal the Chimney Flue

If you don’t use your fireplace regularly, you should seal the chimney flue entirely. This prevents warm air from escaping. While a fire offers cozy warmth and a welcome glow, it’s not as energy efficient as your furnace. Sealing the chimney when not in use is a good way to keep the home warmer and increase your overall energy efficiency.

5. Use Window Coverings Wisely

Your windows can provide a welcome source of warmth when you use them properly. Open the curtains on south-facing windows during the day to allow the sun’s warmth to shine in. Keep the curtains closed on other windows to stop warm air from escaping. Close all the blinds and curtains at night to keep warm air in.

If your heating bills are climbing without explanation, this could indicate that your furnace is nearing the end of its lifespan. Upgrading to a new heater could instantly decrease your energy expenses. Contact Del-Air at 888-831-2665 to learn more about the benefits of a new heating system.
