How Air Conditioners Work

When you turn on your AC system, a set of cold pipes known as an evaporator coil cools the air in a way similar to how water evaporates from the skin. The coil uses liquid refrigerant, which changes into a gas as it absorbs heat. The gas-version of the refrigerant is then pumped out of the house and into another coil called a condenser, wherein it returns to a condensed liquid state. The pump that helps move the refrigerant between the two coils is called a compressor.
